چکیده

In this paper, we study the dynamics of contagious spreading processes taking place in complex contact networks. We specifically present a lower-bound on the decay rate of the number of nodes infected by a susceptible-infectedsusceptible (SIS) stochastic spreading process. A precise quantification of this decay rate is crucial for designing efficient strategies to contain epidemic outbreaks. However, existing lower-bounds on the decay rate based on first-order mean-field approximations are often accompanied by a large error resulting in inefficient containment strategies. To overcome this deficiency, we derive a lower-bound based on a second-order moment-closure of the stochastic SIS processes. The proposed second-order bound is theoretically guaranteed to be tighter than existing first-order bounds. We also present various numerical simulations to illustrate how our lower-bound drastically improves the performance of existing first-order lower-bounds in practical scenarios, resulting in more efficient strategies for epidemic containment.

Complete hierarchies of SIR models on arbitrary networks with exact and approximate moment closure.

We first generalise ideas discussed by Kiss et al. (2015) to prove a theorem for generating exact closures (here expressing joint probabilities in terms of their constituent marginal probabilities) for susceptible-infectious-removed (SIR) dynamics on arbitrary graphs (networks). For Poisson transmission and removal processes, this enables us to obtain a systematic reduction in the number of dif...

Novel moment closure approximations in stochastic epidemics.

Moment closure approximations are used to provide analytic approximations to non-linear stochastic population models. They often provide insights into model behaviour and help validate simulation results. However, existing closure schemes typically fail in situations where the population distribution is highly skewed or extinctions occur. In this study we address these problems by introducing n...

Epidemic thresholds on scale-free graphs: the interplay between exponent and preferential choice

We study epidemic threshold properties in a scale-free random graph model. We show via a branching process approximation that the divergence of the second moment of the degree distribution is equivalent to the absence of an epidemic threshold. We study further the relation between diameter and epidemic threshold. Absence of an epidemic threshold happens precisely when a positive fraction of the...

School closure as an influenza mitigation strategy: how variations in legal authority and plan criteria can alter the impact

BACKGROUND States' pandemic influenza plans and school closure statutes are intended to guide state and local officials, but most faced a great deal of uncertainty during the 2009 influenza H1N1 epidemic. Questions remained about whether, when, and for how long to close schools and about which agencies and officials had legal authority over school closures. METHODS This study began with analy...

Asymptotically inspired moment-closure approximation for adaptive networks.

Adaptive social networks, in which nodes and network structure coevolve, are often described using a mean-field system of equations for the density of node and link types. These equations constitute an open system due to dependence on higher-order topological structures. We propose a new approach to moment closure based on the analytical description of the system in an asymptotic regime. We app...
